ABOUT ABOUT

"Where we write impacts what we write and how we write about it." ~ Arlyn Miller

In Writing for All Genres, acclaimed writer, teacher, and editor Arlyn Miller will offer an array of innovative writing activities, exercises, and prompts with accompanying sample texts, all specially tailored to harness the inspirational magic of glorious Ragdale.

An intimate group of lucky writers will claim the expansive grounds of Ragdale, a renowned and enchanting artists’ retreat in Lake Forest, Illinois, for one whole day—a rare opportunity!

We'll ease into the morning with a check-in followed by a free-write (also known as "Morning Pages"), with coffee, tea and snacks available. The workshop day will be a well-balanced mix of instruction, prompts, writing time, and optional sharing, along with periodic opportunities for both contemplative stillness and body movement.

A delicious midday lunch prepared by Ragdale's wonderful chef will also be provided.

While this is primarily a generative workshop, there will be opportunity for feedback for participants who would like input on their projects or writing.

This day-long workshop, held in a gorgeous setting and led by a master instructor, is well-suited to writers of all genres and levels (including aspiring writers). Writers of memoir, fiction, poetry, essays, and hybrid texts  will leave this workshop with innovative techniques they can use immediately to expand and elevate their work.

Participants should dress in comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing as there will be time spent outdoors, weather permitting. Ragdale is wheelchair accessible and can accommodate special needs and diets.  Food and beverages are included with the workshop fee. Please let Story Jam know about any special considerations by emailing: [email protected]

For an additional fee, guests may request dinner and overnight stay at Ragdale by emailing: [email protected]

About Arlyn Miller

As a child and teenager, Arlyn wrote lots of poems. As an undergraduate history major, she wrote lots of papers. As a transactional lawyer, she wrote lots of voluminous documents. She is an unabashed, gluttonous word lover, relishing words singly and in combination. Writing has always been an act of joy for Arlyn (replete with anguish, too).

More than two decades ago, Arlyn transitioned in earnest to writing poems, articles, and essays—many of which have been published—and to teaching her popular poetry-based creative writing workshops. Arlyn established Poetic License Press which publishes creative writing that is authentic, accessible and engaging; she remains its Senior Editor today.

Arlyn is one of Story Jam Studio's most sought-after instructors. She excels at challenging her students in a spirit of fun and finding the perfect tools to inspire and encourage all writers. Her individualized feedback is truly exceptional. You can find out more about Arlyn and her work at www.poeticlicenseinc.net.
