THE WRITING ROOM has been consistently running since the fall of 2020, with participants rejoining as often as they like. There is always new material presented and each week, you will likely discover two new stories.

This is the Wednesday group. There is also a Friday group.

FAQ

1. Is three hours a long time to be on Zoom?

It might sound like a long time, but a chunk of that time is spent turning off our cameras and microphones and putting into practice the lessons of the week. Think of it as guided writing time with expert feedback! The class goes by very quickly and we pack a lot in.

2. Who are the instructors?

The instructors are highly vetted writing professors, coaches, and storytelling experts from all over the country.

3. How many people are in the class?

There are no more than eight people per section so as to ensure plenty of personal feedback and discussion time.

4. What will we be working on?

We will be writing true, personal stories or "mini memoirs" from our lives, mostly told in the first person. Each week, the invited instructor will introduce a new concept with examples, and guide us on some aspect of writing—such as dialogue, metaphor, tone, character, or humor, for example—and give the group writing prompts which, for some, will support and serve our designated weekly writing time.

Sometimes, participants choose to bring in personal projects or stories they're working on. There is always sharing time and feedback built into each class and participants may also just listen and observe if they wish. There is no pressure to share, but sharing is when a lot of the richest learning occurs in class.

5. I am a new writer. Will I feel intimidated?

Absolutely not! If anyone ever feels intimidated at a Story Jam event, then we are not doing our job! Story Jam is committed to inclusion and creating safe, welcoming spaces for all. This is a wonderfully supportive and fun yet challenging class.

6. Do you accept payment plans or offer discounts?
