ABOUT ABOUT

OUR MOST POPULAR CLASS RETURNS!

The Writing Room features six weeks of personal narrative writing and storytelling led by a rotation of excellent instructors. Each week, participants receive prompts, ample writing time, feedback, and a brief focused lesson on some aspect of writing and personal narrative craft.

The group is intimate, warm, and welcoming, and this class has helped hundreds of people find and develop their true, personal stories.

This is the Friday group. There is also a Wednesday group which covers the same exact material. If you cannot make it to a particular Friday class, you are welcome to do a makeup class that week on Wednesday.

BEST SERVES: Writers; aspiring writers; storytellers; aspiring storytellers; anyone who’d like to work on personal narratives and develop skills in a warm, challenging environment; those who’d enjoy a strong college or graduate-level writing class.

New writers welcome!

FAQ

1. is three hours a long time to be online?

It might sound like a long time, but a chunk of that time is spent turning off our cameras and microphones and putting into practice the lessons of the week. Think of it as guided writing time with expert feedback! The class goes by very quickly and we pack a lot in.

2. Who are the instructors?

The instructors are highly vetted writing professors, coaches, and storytelling experts.

3. How many people are in the class?

There are no more than eight people per section so as to ensure plenty of personal feedback time.

4. What will we be working on?

We will be writing true, personal stories from our lives, mostly told in the first person. Each week, the invited instructor will share a new concept with examples, or guide us on some aspect of writing—such as dialogue, metaphor, tone, character, humor, or irony, for example—and give the group prompts to launch into writing time. Sometimes, participants choose to work on their own projects. There is always sharing time and feedback built into each class and participants are welcome to just listen and observe if they wish.

5. I am a new writer. Will I feel intimidated?

Absolutely not! If anyone ever feels intimidated at a Story Jam event, then we are not doing our job! Story Jam is committed to inclusion and creating safe, welcoming spaces for all. This is a supportive yet deliciously challenging class.

6. Do you accept payment plans or offer discounts?

Yes! New students can get $30 off by using code STORY1 at checkout. Please reach out to [email protected] for other payment considerations.
